Offending ISP’s
Is your ISP redirecting subdomains? Is it listed here? If not, let us know via comment. Give a link to an example, possibly a link to how to thwart it and we’ll add it to our list.
Learn more here about why opt-out systems are bad.
Charter – Charter’s opt-out system for redirects. This method means they’re still using the same DNS’s – and probably recording your history, even if you’ve opted out of being redirected. Currently powered by Yahoo Search. Charter’s Privacy Policy.
Earthlink – Earthlink’s opt-out system involves actually changing DNS’s.
Verizon – Opt-out policy here. Change the DNS of one of your DNS servers. This likely does not stop Verizon from keeping a history of your browsing efforts.
Embarq – no opt-out information is available yet.
Cox – Apparently they’ve been doing it longer than most others.
DNS Services
OpenDNS – OpenDNS’s privacy policy boldly states that it records, saves and sells everything about your browser history, ’shares’ it with third parties and isn’t responsible for what the third parties do with your information. The ’sharing’ of the your history is probably what makes offering the DNS service ‘free’ to the DNS subscriber. You use the service with the knowledge that your history is being saved and ’shared.’
